MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO, the Mercedes-Benz system for advanced urban semi-automated driving (SAE Level 2) developed in collaboration with NVIDIA, will be available to order from the first half of 2027. The system provides support from start to finish, making everyday driving significantly more comfortable, even in complex city traffic.
Existing customers with appropriately equipped vehicles can install the function via an over-the-air update and bring the new driving experience directly to their vehicles. Mercedes-Benz will thus be the first automaker to offer such a system in Germany, in addition to China and the USA. Availability depends on the model and will be rolled out across the entire Mercedes-Benz passenger car and van product portfolio. Further details will be announced before the respective market launch. Customers will also be able to try out the function free of charge for one month, provided their Mercedes has the necessary equipment.
“MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO offers our customers a new level of safety, intelligence, and confidence behind the wheel. Its launch in Germany underscores our ambition to play a leading role in automated and assisted driving,” said, Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
“Safe autonomous driving requires intelligence to master complex urban streets and a world in constant motion. Mercedes-Benz has shaped the automobile for generations, and together we are shaping its future. We are combining the outstanding engineering and high safety standards of Mercedes-Benz with NVIDIA Hyperion to make the next generation of intelligent driving accessible to more people,” said, Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA.
Enhanced assistance from start to finish
With the new point-to-point driving experience, Mercedes-Benz supports drivers from start to finish, making everyday journeys more comfortable and less tiring. On highways, established assistance systems already enable relaxed travel. MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO now extends this support to the entire navigation route. The system assists, for example, when exiting the highway and when driving through dense city traffic. With Mercedes-Benz Navigation active, the function can be easily activated by pressing a button on the steering wheel. Lane changes, merging into the correct lane, turning at intersections, and braking and accelerating at traffic lights are thus significantly easier.
MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO available in advance in Stuttgart and Munich
From the end of 2026, Mercedes-Benz plans to launch the system in Stuttgart and Munich for selected customers whose vehicles are already equipped with the necessary hardware and who will be contacted separately. For these customers, the system will be activated in advance via over-the-air (OTA), allowing valuable initial customer feedback to be incorporated into continuous improvement and later rolled out to the entire vehicle fleet.
Approval according to updated UN regulations
A UNECE working group on automated/autonomous and connected vehicles has previously adopted the new regulation UN R171. It establishes requirements for the type approval of vehicles with driver control assistance systems (DCAS) and sets out strict safety standards. Mercedes-Benz welcomes this high standard, as the harmonized regulatory framework provides a solid foundation for the regulated and therefore safe introduction of advanced driver assistance functions. At the same time, it opens up the possibility of offering these technologies to customers in additional markets. This could mean that the function could be introduced in all EU markets in the future without further regulatory approval.
The system utilizes 27 sensors, including ten cameras, five radar sensors, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. These deliver raw data to a high-performance computer capable of processing up to 254 TOPs (Topics of Operation). MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO combines the Mercedes-Benz operating system MB.OS with the NVIDIA Hyperion in-vehicle computing and sensor architecture, the Halos full-stack safety system, and Alpamayo Stack software to enable advanced driver assistance. The cooperative hands-on steering concept combines enhanced assistance with the assurance that the driver can provide steering inputs at any time. This creates a safe and intuitive driving experience from start to finish. As an SAE Level 2 system, MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO requires continuous driver attention. Control and responsibility for the vehicle remain with the driver at all times.
